Why Mangroves Matter
This International Planting day we want to shine a spotlight on one of the most important yet often overlooked ecosystems on Earth – Mangroves. Found in coastal regions across the tropics and subtropics, these salt-tolerant trees play a critical role in protecting our environment and sustaining biodiversity.
Climate Change Warriors
Mangroves are among the world’s most powerful carbon sinks, storing up to four times more carbon per hectare than tropical rainforests (Donato et al., 2011). Their ability to sequester and store carbon in their dense root systems and sediment makes them a crucial tool in the fight against climate change.
Coastal Defenders
Mangrove forests form a natural buffer against extreme weather, reducing storm surges and minimizing coastal erosion. Research has shown that mangrove forests can reduce wave heights by up to 66% (McIvor et al., 2012). In regions prone to hurricanes and typhoons, mangroves significantly decrease damage to communities and infrastructure. Their complex root systems also stabilize coastlines, preventing land loss due to rising sea levels.
Biodiversity Hotspots
Mangroves provide a critical habitat for countless species, including fish, crustaceans, birds, and even large mammals. They act as nurseries for 75% of commercially caught fish species in tropical regions (FAO, 2007), making them essential for both marine biodiversity and local fisheries. Without mangroves, many marine species would struggle to survive.
Water Filtration & Ecosystem Health
Mangroves play a vital role in maintaining water quality by filtering out pollutants, heavy metals, and excess nutrients before they reach coral reefs and seagrass meadows. This process helps prevent harmful algal blooms and ensures the health of surrounding marine ecosystems (Alongi, 2002).
Mangrove Loss & the Need for Action
Despite their immense value, mangrove forests are disappearing at an alarming rate. Over the past 50 years, more than 35% of the world’s mangroves have been lost due to coastal development, aquaculture, and deforestation (Duke et al., 2007). The loss of mangroves accelerates climate change, increases the risk of coastal disasters, and threatens countless species.
