The Power of Play: How Greentopia is Inspiring the Next Generation of Environmental Stewards

The Power of Play: How Greentopia is Inspiring the Next Generation of Environmental Stewards

At OrcaNation, we are constantly inspired by the creativity and determination of young people who are committed to making a difference. One such example is Greentopia, a groundbreaking project by students at Nexus International School, Singapore. This sustainability-focused card game is not just a fun activity—it’s a powerful tool for raising awareness about environmental challenges and inspiring action.

The students’ approach is nothing short of inspiring—by gamifying critical issues, they’ve found a way to make sustainability tangible and engaging. This is crucial in a world where capturing attention and driving action are more important (and challenging) than ever.

We’re proud to announce that OrcaNation will be incorporating Greentopia into some of our outdoor education, sustainability, and conservation programmes. Together, we’ll empower more young minds to understand their role in protecting our planet while having fun along the way.

To dive deeper into the story behind Greentopia, we sat down with one of its creators, Danyil Kramchenkov, to learn more about the project, its goals, and its journey.

Can you tell us what Greentopia is all about?

Danyil: Greentopia is a sustainability-focused card game designed to educate and engage players about real-world environmental challenges. It’s a strategic game for 2-6 players, where you solve environmental events, earn eco-points, and keep the Sustainability Index (SI) above zero.

What makes it special is that it’s not just about competition; it’s also about collaboration. Players have to work together to tackle challenges while balancing risks and rewards. The game is also aligned with its core message—we’ve used recycled and biodegradable materials in its design to emphasize sustainability.

What inspired you and your team to develop Greentopia?

Danyil: Our inspiration came from the need to make sustainability education more engaging. Traditional learning methods can sometimes feel dry or disconnected from real life, so we wanted to create something fun and interactive.

We’re passionate about combating climate change and promoting positive action, and Greentopia felt like the perfect way to combine those passions. It’s a way to teach important lessons while encouraging people to have fun and connect with others.

What is the core message or goal of the game?

Danyil: The message is simple: sustainability is a shared responsibility, and small actions can lead to significant impacts.

Greentopia encourages players to think critically about the challenges we face and how collaboration can lead to better outcomes. Our goal is for players to leave the game with a deeper understanding of their role in protecting the planet and feel inspired to make a difference in their everyday lives.

Can you explain how the game works and what makes it unique?

Danyil: The game revolves around three types of cards:

  • Green Cards: These provide safe, sustainable solutions.
  • Purple Cards: These are high-risk, high-reward actions.
  • Yellow Cards: These represent environmental events that players must resolve.

Players work together to keep the Sustainability Index above zero by solving these challenges and earning eco-points.

What makes Greentopia unique is the balance between competition and collaboration—it’s not just about winning but about solving problems together. Plus, its eco-friendly design reinforces its message. For example, we used recycled pulp for the cards, biodegradable tokens, and handmade pouches from recycled uniforms.

What challenges did you face, and how did you overcome them?

Danyil: We faced several challenges:

  1. Production Costs: Finding affordable suppliers for sustainable materials was tough. We addressed this by crafting many components ourselves, like hand-sewing pouches and laser-cutting tokens.
  2. Team Dynamics: With only a few active contributors, the workload was challenging. We overcame this by prioritizing communication and reallocating tasks based on our strengths.
  3. Technical Feasibility: Designing functional prototypes required creativity and many iterations. It took patience and persistence, but we’re proud of the polished product we’ve created.
What did you learn from this project?

Danyil: So much!

  • Sustainability: Small, thoughtful actions can have tangible environmental benefits.
  • Game Development: Balancing creativity, practicality, and user experience is key to creating something engaging.
  • Teamwork: Communication and resilience are essential for overcoming challenges, especially in a team setting.

Why are projects like Greentopia important?

Danyil: They raise awareness about critical issues like climate change in a way that’s interactive and engaging. Traditional approaches can struggle to capture attention, but gamifying these issues makes them tangible and accessible.

Projects like Greentopia also show how creativity and collaboration can address global challenges. They inspire people to take action and remind us that small efforts can lead to big changes.

What are your hopes for the future of Greentopia?

Danyil: We see a bright future for the game. Our goals include:

  • Expanding with new card sets and challenges.
  • Partnering with schools to make Greentopia a learning tool.
  • Creating a digital version to reach a wider audience.
  • Collaborating with environmental organizations to amplify its impact.

We hope it becomes a catalyst for meaningful conversations and actions around sustainability.

Thank you, Danyil, for sharing your story. Do you have any final thoughts?

Danyil: Just a huge thank you to everyone who has supported us so far. We’re excited to see how Greentopia grows and makes a difference. And thank you to OrcaNation for incorporating it into your programs—we can’t wait to see it inspire even more young people!
