The Power of Orcas & Teamwork
How Exploring New Opportunities in Dubai Showed Us the Strength of the Pod
By Jeroen van de Waal, Founder & Chief Orca, OrcaNation
Orcas, or killer whales, are some of the most powerful, intelligent, and strategic creatures in the ocean. They thrive in pods, where teamwork, collaboration, intelligence, and trust define their very existence. As I reflect on our first intense but rewarding week in the Middle East, I see so many parallels between how OrcaNation operates and how orcas move through the vast oceans, facing challenges and seizing opportunities together.
Just as orcas never hunt alone—coordinating attacks on prey, using strategy to outmanoeuvre even the most formidable challenges—we, too, relied on each other to navigate a fast-paced, high-stakes schedule in the UAE. And just as orcas communicate through complex calls, passing down knowledge through generations, we shared insights, adapted quickly, and turned every interaction into a meaningful moment for our mission.
Lessons from the Orca Pod: Strength in Unity
In the wild, orca pods thrive because of their structure and synergy:
- Matriarchal Leadership 🧬 – The oldest and most experienced females lead their pods, guiding them through the challenges of the ocean.
- Cultural Knowledge Transfer 🗣️ – Orcas pass down hunting strategies, dialects, and traditions to ensure the survival and success of the group.
- Tactical Coordination 🎯 – Whether hunting seals or flipping great white sharks, they plan, execute, and adapt in real-time to achieve success.
- Emotional Bonds & Support ❤️ – Orcas grieve their dead, support weaker members, and celebrate successes together.
This is exactly how we operated in our first week in the UAE.
Our Middle Eastern Expedition: The Pod in Action
This first week was a test of our agility, adaptability, and collective strength, proving that our OrcaNation pod is built for success:
🐳 Handling Scheduling Challenges with Seamless Coordination
Our back-end team, led by Beverley, kept things running remotely, ensuring that no matter how tight the timeline, we never missed a beat. Every delay, every change—handled with precision.
🐳 Navigating Logistical Adversities with Speed & Intelligence
Between long taxi rides, technology hiccups, and tight transitions, we stayed ahead of the curve. While I focused on delivering impactful keynotes, Lucas ensured that I was equipped and ready for each session—overcoming tech obstacles, missing cables, and adapting to unfamiliar systems on the go.
🐳 Strategic Intelligence Gathering: Knowing the Ocean Before We Swim
Orcas study their environment before they strike, and our team mirrored this. Andrew and Zoe gathered crucial school and strategic intelligence, allowing us to walk into every meeting already “knowing” the school’s history, traditions, and leadership. This transformed each interaction into a warm, personal experience rather than a cold introduction.
🐳 Perfecting the Message: A Presentation That Made Waves
Like orcas using distinct communication dialects, our message was fine-tuned to perfection. Lexi’s meticulously crafted slide deck and presentation script ensured a seamless narrative flow, guiding the audience effortlessly through our mission. The response? A big bang—resonating with educators, students, and leadership alike.
🐳 Adapting & Seizing Opportunities: Real-Time Strategic Thinking
Orcas think fast, adjusting their strategy when hunting prey or avoiding threats. With Derek available around the clock, we were able to discuss and capitalize on ad hoc strategic opportunities in real-time. This agility and adaptability were crucial to making our presence impactful.
🐳 Engaging Minds, Creating Conversations
Orcas don’t just hunt—they interact, they learn, they evolve. After every keynote, we received dozens of insightful questions from both students and teachers. This not only showed engagement but also provided us with valuable input for future marketing, content, and outreach.
Conclusion: The Future of OrcaNation in the Middle East
This first week in Dubai has been nothing short of extraordinary. It has solidified our belief that OrcaNation belongs in the Middle East. Just as orcas travel the vast oceans, forming deep bonds and expanding their reach, we see the UAE and the surrounding region as the next great frontier for our mission.
We are not just a company—we are a pod. And together, we are building something truly powerful: a movement that unites education, adventure, sustainability, and innovation.
I couldn’t be prouder of our team. This was just the beginning. Let’s dive deeper, swim faster, and expand further.
Together, we are unstoppable.
