Stripes of the Rainforest: Protecting Malaysia’s Tigers
By Ryan Manders
At OrcaNation, our mission frequently takes us across the diverse and beautiful landscapes of Southeast Asia, particularly Malaysia, where many of our environmentally focused educational programmes take place. I am personally, continuously inspired by the wildlife, ecosystems, and communities that make this region so special.
In that spirit of connection to nature, I recently watched a powerful documentary that inspired me deeply; Malaysia’s Last Tigers. This is a film that explores Malaysia’s tigers, other wildlife species that share their home, and the challenges tigers face due to habitat loss and human impacts.
Tigers have roamed these jungles long before humans arrived. Despite their extraordinary adaptations—such as their signature camouflage, silent movement, and ambush hunting skills, they are now critically endangered. These majestic creatures are naturally shy and solitary, often patrolling vast territories in search of food. Tiger mothers, similarly to people, are very protective of their cubs and need to be patient teachers as they guide their cubs to not only survive in the wild, but an increasingly changing world as they navigate threats like deforestation and poaching.
Human Impact
The documentary emphasises human impacts such as deforestation and poaching, which are just some of the many threats endangering Malaysian ecosystems and the rich biodiversity they support. It also brings light to the unfortunate disconnect that many of us have from the incredible natural world around us. Yet, it also showcases the inspiring passion and dedication of those working tirelessly to protect these animals and their habitats. And while we may not have been directly involved in this project, we can all play a meaningful part through the daily choices we make as well as our curiosity, kindness, and attention to our natural environments.
Looking at the bigger picture of what we do at OrcaNation, we are lucky enough to help people, especially children, connect the dots and bridge the gap to build environmental curiosity, connection, and understanding. This opportunity to foster a deeper connection with nature and strengthen our environmental identity is the spark that fuels me and my team.
I feel incredibly grateful to be part of a group of people that shares this vision, a team that shows up everyday with dedication, compassion, and belief in a better future. I am equally inspired to see other individuals and groups working toward the same goals, maybe from different angles, but with the same heartbeat.
Get Involved
If you have a moment, I encourage you to watch this documentary, perhaps during a lunch break or a quiet evening at home. I hope it inspires you as much as it did me and maybe even sparks a renewed sense of purpose.
If it resonates with you, we’d love to hear your thoughts, or better yet, join us. Conservation is a team effort, and there’s room for everyone.
