SCUBA DIVING FOR FAMILIES AND KIDS
Sophie van de Waal
Does your child love the water? Looking for a fun new hobby to enjoy as a family? Then scuba diving could be the perfect adventure to get them hooked on a lifelong love for the ocean! PADI Bubblemakers are designed for kids aged 8 and up, while Discover Scuba Diving (DSD) is perfect for those 10 and older. In the comfort of a swimming pool, kids can take their first underwater breaths in a safe and controlled environment—all while having an absolute blast! Beyond the fun, they’ll gain valuable life skills and develop a deeper appreciation for the ocean that could last a lifetime.
WHY KIDS SHOULD LEARN TO DIVE
Scuba diving is more than just an exhilarating experience—it boasts a range of benefits for young explorers:
- Builds Water Confidence: Mastering the basics of breathing underwater and moving with ease creates a solid foundation for water confidence and overall swimming ability.
- Encourages Responsibility: Managing their own scuba gear while staying calm and aware underwater helps kids develop a strong sense of responsibility.
- Develops Focus & Patience: Diving alongside others of different ages and skill levels fosters an environment where patience, concentration, and attentiveness naturally grow.
- Introduces Marine Awareness: A Bubble Maker or DSD experience is the first step in building a lifelong connection with the ocean. Marine awareness sessions can also be included to teach kids about marine life and conservation.
WHAT THEY WILL LEARN
A Bubblemaker or DSD is a safe way for kids to be introduced to scuba diving. A single session already allows students to learn the basics of scuba diving in a controlled environment. Here’s what they’ll learn:
- Basic Equipment Use: Bubble Makers and DSD participants use the same equipment as certified divers! The BCD (Buoyancy Control Device)—the jacket they wear—along with tank sizes can be adjusted to suit their size. They’ll also learn about the different parts of their gear and how each one works.
- Breathing Underwater: One of the most exciting (and important) parts of the experience is learning to breathe underwater. Since this is a completely new sensation for most kids, they’ll be eased into it at a comfortable pace to ensure a smooth and enjoyable first dive.
- Equalization Techniques: While equalization isn’t typically needed in a swimming pool, kids will still learn essential techniques to prepare them for future dives where pressure changes become a factor.
- Basic Underwater Communication: Since divers can’t speak underwater, learning hand signals is a key skill. This not only requires focus but also encourages creativity—many signals, including those for different fish, can often be guessed using common sense!
- Swimming with Scuba Gear: What’s a dive without experiencing the thrill of swimming with full gear? Once the basics are covered, kids will get to glide through the water with their scuba equipment on—an experience often compared to floating in space!
Did you know, that you can do as many DSDs or Bubblemakers as you like to develop your skills without doing a full course!? Some of our youngest divers have 10, 20, or even more dives before they do their first official course.
FUN AND GAMES
If time allows for it and students feel comfortable in the water with their gear on, there are some fun activities to boost their confidence even more and give a hint as to what progressing through the PADI certifications in the future might look like. Some of the activities include:
- Buoyancy Games: These fun challenges help kids refine their breathing and swimming skills as they navigate through obstacles without touching them. This introduces an element of physics, as controlling buoyancy through lung control plays a crucial role in scuba diving.
- Simple Navigation Skills: Navigation can be tricky, so starting young gives kids a great advantage! They’ll be guided through the basics of using a compass and may even take on a fun task—like locating a missing object underwater.
- Buddy System Practice: Working with a dive buddy strengthens teamwork and communication skills. This is a great opportunity for kids to put their new hand signals into practice while learning the importance of looking out for one another underwater.
TRANSFERRABLE SKILLS
Scuba diving isn’t just about having fun underwater—it teaches valuable life skills that can benefit kids in many ways:
- Discipline & Responsibility: Following instructions, adhering to safety rules, and caring for their equipment instills a strong sense of responsibility and self-discipline.
- Teamwork & Communication: Diving alongside others—often with new friends—enhances communication skills and fosters teamwork in a unique and exciting environment.
- Critical Thinking & Problem-Solving: Fun dive challenges encourage kids to think independently and develop problem-solving skills, with gentle guidance when needed.
- Physical Coordination & Fitness: Balancing, maneuvering, and controlling movement underwater improves coordination, benefiting other sports and activities.
- Stress Management & Adaptability: Initially, the inability to speak underwater might feel overwhelming, but by staying calm and focused, kids quickly learn alternative ways to communicate—an essential life skill for managing stress and adapting to new situations.
- Environmental Awareness: Exploring the underwater world fosters a deep appreciation for marine life and ecosystems, inspiring a sense of responsibility for protecting our oceans.
- Social Skills & Trust: Diving is a team activity that builds cooperation, communication, and trust—especially through the buddy system—skills that translate into all areas of life.
If your child is ready to explore a whole new world beneath the surface, a Bubble Maker or Discover Scuba Diving experience is the perfect place to start. It’s safe, exciting, and packed with adventure—who knows, they might just discover their new favorite hobby! And if they catch the diving bug, they can continue their training and work toward becoming a certified junior diver—unlocking even more underwater adventures!
