FOBISIA Leadership Conference Keynote Reflections

Standing on the stage at the FOBISIA Leaders’ Conference felt like stepping into a sea of opportunity. Addressing a distinguished audience of visionary leaders from some of the world’s most elite private schools, I had one mission: to share my story, my purpose, and my vision for education’s critical role in shaping a sustainable future.
This keynote wasn’t just a speech; it was a call to action. A journey beneath the surface—both of the ocean and our collective conscience—toward a future where young people are empowered to become leaders of positive change.
How Finding Purpose Transformed My Life
One of the most powerful messages I wanted to convey is how transformative finding purpose can be for students and how connecting with nature can spark its discovery. For me, finding purpose wasn’t just a pivotal moment—it was a profound sea change that redefined my entire life and career.
After decades of success in corporate leadership roles across industries such as oil, gas, and mining, I reached a crossroads. Despite my achievements, I felt a profound disconnect between my work and my personal values. Then, in the wake of an unexpected dismissal, I found the opportunity to reevaluate my priorities and rebuild a career grounded in purpose.
Discovering my true purpose brought me clarity and direction. It transformed me from a corporate executive into an Orca, embodying the intelligence, fearlessness, and deeply community-oriented nature of these magnificent creatures.
Purpose, for me, is far more than a personal motivator; it’s a force that drives meaningful action. It fuels resilience, strengthens leadership, and creates a ripple effect, inspiring others to take bold, intentional steps toward building a better future.
How Experiential Education Helps Students Find Purpose
When done well, experiential education can take young people on a powerful journey of self-discovery that can help them uncover their purpose. When students step out of the classroom and into the real world – experiencing nature, exploring ecosystems, leading conservation efforts, or tackling community challenges, they’re not only learning critical skills—they can realise the profound impact they can make, and could be discovering their “why.”
These transformative experiences can ignite their creativity and passions, reveal their unique strengths, and connect them to a greater sense of meaning. As they see their actions creating change, they can gain the confidence to navigate uncertainty and the empathy to solve complex problems, empowering them to shape a brighter future for themselves and drive innovation that will benefit us all.
This theory really came to light on stage at FOBISIA when i was joined by five incredibly inspirational young people, who demonstrated just how powerful finding their purpose could be.
Catalyst For Global Change And Driving A New Economy
The second most important message that I wanted to share is that a life and career grounded in purpose is not only fulfilling but can also be economically viable, especially when aligned with opportunities that benefit our planet, and in particular our ocean.
The Blue Economy is a prime example of how purpose-driven careers can create both impact and prosperity. Covering industries like marine renewable energy, sustainable fisheries, ocean data analytics, and marine biotechnology, the Blue Economy has the potential to add $100 trillion to global GDP over the next 30-50 years. It offers a wealth of opportunities for students to innovate, lead, and make a difference—whether as engineers developing tidal energy solutions, scientists restoring coral reefs, or entrepreneurs creating biodegradable alternatives to ocean plastics.
By helping students find purpose, we prepare them to thrive in careers that not only sustain our planet but also drive sustainable economic growth.
To unlock this potential, we must invest in ocean literacy and empower the next generation of leaders and innovators to champion its preservation and sustainable use. The ocean holds the key to a thriving, equitable future. Are we ready to release it?

Together we can create a world where education fuels not just careers but also purpose, sustainability, and resilience.
